The fact that everyone was saying "BIRD PRISON" when she got to the parrots was actually so fucking annoying, like yeah sure those birds are totally suffering being kept here where they receive daily enrichment and are loved and cared for by staff in a large enclosure and would be sooo much better off in a 3 foot by five foot cage in someone's house like they would be living in if it weren't for Alveus, stfu people from 2 years ago glad chat is not like that anymore

I was really stoked when I saw in one of your videos on the construction of the wolf dog enclosure that you had found one of these. I don’t think you realize how amazing that is. I grew up in the Texas Hill Country in the 60’s and 70’s and still live here. “Horny toads” were everywhere when I was a kid, but eventually disappeared. During a visit to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park and Forest in the late 80s, I recall a sign saying to take special care to avoid any horned lizards because that was thought to be the last surviving population in Texas! And you found one 600 miles away at Alveus! I’m curious to know, has the population been rebounding, and I’m just the last one to hear about it, or is this truly a super-rare and important wildlife encounter? Either way, it’s fantastic news.

Grew up on a farm, ma's a butcher, and I 9000% agree we need to eat less beef. Ma keeps one cow in the barn yard. Her name is Hershey, her father was a black angus bull that got put in the wrong pen and the owner of the heifer didn't want the baby because it was not fathered by a dairy breed, which is what her mama is. They were gonna sell her for meat processing but my ma offered to take her instead about 7 years ago. She's still a happy and loving moo! She's got 11 acers to roam split into two pastures, both lightly wooded so she's got trees to scratch herself against and a herd of pygmy/african dwarf goats for playful company. Add on 60 odd chickens and a herding dog, and there's never a quiet day on the farm. Now my mom's a butcher, but she also loves animals and animal care. To her, you care for an animal and keep it happy and healthy their whole life through. Then, when they grow old and an injury or otherwise compromises their quality of life, you respect the animal by using every bit of their body. Because nature doesn't waste a single shred. And you don't kill unwanted young, *because they're here now.* They are living beings you are responsible for. Ma has nursed so many chickens back to health after hawk attacks, unwilling to let a still living bird die without intervention. One had to recover for 2 months and lived inside the house during that time until she was strong enough to rejoin the flock in the yard. The goats were added to deter small predators, like foxes. The cow was a happy accident that also scares off most large birds who won't dive at a chicken being watched over by 2 tons of This Is My Herd momma energy. Between all the animals, no table scraps go to waste. Not even peelings. Chickens are omnivorous but don't love green veggies, goats will eat the green veggies, and Hershey's favorite snack is bigger inedibles like a corn cob. And the corn plants at the end of the season, lol. And all the waste the animals produce goes to compost, and then plowed back into the land. It's the difference between Commodity Agriculture and Wholistic Agriculture. If you raise animals to be products, you will over produce and torture living beings for your own gain. If you raise animals because they are a key part of the ecosystem you're managing to enrich soil and grow crops? You want them happy and healthy, with space and enrichment and friends to keep them safe and sane. You can't just *take* from an animal and expect it to be okay indifinitely-- you gotta *give* too. I hope the future of cattle is community farms where a small herd of 4 or 5 provide milk and fertilizer, living long lives cared for by many hands. And part of that is accepting beef will be, at most, a once a year event that meant we had to say goodbye to someone, so I *better* make it damn delicious and make sure nothing goes to waste.
